The Fleurieu & Districts Zone junior cricket grand finals were played last weekend. The Figg Cup (Under 21’s), Calaby Shield (Under 15’s) and Fuller Shield (Under 13’s) showcase the best juniors in the region with two qualifying rounds being played before the deciders took place on Sunday.
The Figg Cup grand final was held at Yankalilla between Hills and Kangaroo Island with KI batting first and making 9/179 from their 50 overs. Tyler Richardson (24) and Eli Kuchel (23) were the leading batsmen for Kangaroo Island, while a whopping 34 extras boosted the total significantly. Seven Hills bowlers took wickets with Liam Kemp (2/32) leading the way. Unfortunately, rain intervened for the second innings as the match was abandoned and the title was awarded to Hills as they had finished top of the standings after the qualifying rounds.
The Calaby Shield was taken out by Great Southern after they defeated Alexandra & Eastern Hills (AEHCA) by 66 runs at McLaren Vale. Great Southern batted first and compiled an imposing 5/243 from their 45 overs. Josh Leister-Mitchell (65), Hayden Ats (53) and Jayden Simons (51) all compiled half centuries. Angus Crickmar (2/34) was the leading wicket taker for AEHCA. The total always appeared out of reach for Alexandra & Eastern Hills as they finished on 8/177 with Mason Clohesy (45) and Elisha Thiele (43 not out) adding 87 runs for the eighth wicket. Max Tresidder (2/6), Jett Stewart (2/19) and Dylan Hill (2/33) were the leading wicket takers for Great Southern.
Great Southern also took out the Fuller Shield after a tense five-wicket victory over Alexandra & Eastern Hills at Aldinga Oval. AEHCA batted first and compiled 9/126 from their 40 overs with Brodie Woods (28) and Tyrian Cousins (27) leading the way with the bat. Nicholas Minot took 2/7 (3) for Great Southern. Max Petrucci dominated the first part of the run chase for Great Southern as he top scored with 48 (73 balls), but when Great Southern slipped to 5/79, it was anyone's game. Abel Leask (25 not out) and Deegan Briggs (19 not out) then came together to add 48 for the sixth wicket to get their side home in the final over. Archie Frost bowled an excellent spell to finish with 2/14 (8) for Alexandra & Eastern Hills.
