Fleurieu elder leads Voice celebrations

Ngarrindjeri elder Major ‘Moogy’ Sumner will lead First Nations musicians and performers in marking a historic day for South Australia tomorrow, Sunday March 26.

A special event on the front steps of Parliament will mark the passage of Australia’s first Voice to Parliament into law.

Respected Elder Moogy Sumner will open proceedings with a special smoking ceremony and multi-talented Aboriginal singer-songwriter Nathan May will perform throughout the event.

At 11am, MC Shelley Ware will conduct the special state ceremony, during which the passage of the First Nations Voice bill through the Parliament will be broadcast to crowds on large screens.

Following the passage of the bill during the special Sunday sitting of Parliament, Premier Peter Malinauskas, Aboriginal Affairs Minister Kyam Maher and state Governor Frances Adamson AC will formally proclaim the legislation on the front steps.

The passage of the bill will make South Australia the first state to establish a Voice to Parliament.

Aboriginal Affairs Minister Kyam Maher says South Australia has a rich history of progressive and inclusive democratic reforms.

“But few, if any of us alive today, have had a chance to witness one these historic moments.

“On Sunday, that will change.

“I know Sunday will be an historic day for SA and for First Nations people, as South Australia becomes the first state in the Commonwealth to adopt a Voice to Parliament, one of the key tenets of the Uluru Statement of the Heart.

“It will also be a significant moment for those in the broader community who wish to share their support of the Voice.

“I look forward to the public being given a rare glimpse into the process of law-making on such a momentous occasion and encourage everyone who can to attend.”
