The Fleurieu has been well-represented in the SA Landscape Architecture Awards, (SALA) announced last week.

Salt Wind Garden, located on the exposed frontline of Carrickalinga Beach, took out one of five excellence awards, Oxigen claiming the top honour in the Gardens category.

The Victor Harbor Amphitheatre won the Cultural Heritage Landscape Architecture Award for Wax Design.

The amphitheatre, on the foreshore next to Soldiers Memorial Gardens on Flinders Parade, was completed as part of Stage three of the City of Victor Harbor Mainstreet Precinct redevelopment.

It has been used for events such as the recent Welcoming of the Whales ceremony and NAIDOC week celebrations.

The City of Onkaparinga took out four awards, including a Landscape Planning excellence award for its Greening Onkaparinga Suburb Improvement Program Review. 

The council also won awards for the Aldinga Framework Plan and for the Wilfred Taylor Reserve Nature Playspace, in Morphet Vale, with Peter Semple Landscape Architects.

SALA gave its Presidents Award to the City of Onkaparinga for its outstanding success across categories.

Jury chair Janelle Arbon says this year’s award winners considered not only the future of South Australia’s landscape, but the sentiment attached to the spaces.

“The jury applauds the nods to the past, the integration and amplification of character, the woven storytelling, and the leadership to overcome technical and compliance challenges,” she says.

“The nominated projects once again prove landscape architects are respectful, inclusive and innovative.”
