Gardening, researching family history, dancing, and a range of sport and leisure activities are just some of the things that can be enjoyed as a part of the Flourishing on the Fleurieu Festival, running from 17-30 April.
Held every two years, the festival celebrates and showcases how people within the region can keep connected by getting involved with activities in their local community.
This year’s exciting program will run throughout the second half of April, following postponement of the festival in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions.
All are welcome to join in the festivities with events taking place in locations across the Fleurieu, including at Carrickalinga House, Goolwa Aquatic Club, Strathalbyn Neighbourhood Centre, and Yankalilla’s Club Fleurieu.
Michelle Fuller is the project officer for the Southern Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island Positive Ageing Taskforce.
She says it is more important than ever to support people who may be experiencing loneliness within our communities, and to promote the wonderful opportunities provided by local community groups.
“Maintaining social relationships and connections can become challenging as people get older, but it has become even more difficult recently due to the impact of Covid-19,” Ms Fuller says.
“The purpose of Flourishing on the Fleurieu is to celebrate ageing well. We also have a particular focus on addressing the issue of loneliness and connecting individuals through meaningful community participation and social activities.
“We want to promote wellbeing, facilitate social connection for seniors, and adopt a whole of-community approach towards addressing the challenges associated with loneliness.
“There really is something for everyone to enjoy with activities ranging from snooker games and community singing in a capella style, to boxing.
“You can even give dragon-boating a try, or check out the Community Gardens. There are also various open days and exhibitions to attend, and a Back-to-School Day.”
The Positive Ageing Taskforce has expressed thanks and appreciation to all the community groups across the Victor Harbor, Alexandrina, and Yankalilla council areas participating in the Festival by hosting the events and activities featured in the program.
The Flourishing on the Fleurieu Festival program is available online or can be collected from your local council office.
