Formula One Grand Prix aficionado brings wealth of motorsport knowledge

Mike Drewer, widely known for bringing the Formula One Grand Prix to life in Adelaide, has been announced as the guest speaker at the annual McLaren Vale Vintage & Classic Charity Dinner, providing eventgoers and motorheads with the opportunity to hear from the passionate motorsport enthusiast.

Held at Serafino Restaurant the night before the parade on Saturday 22 April, the annual charity dinner provides the opportunity to give back to the McLaren Vale community and raise funds for those who deserve it most.

In its 17th year running, Mike Drewer will offer his expert knowledge and insight of the motorsport industry while telling stories of the motorsport alumni he has met along the way.

“I’m excited to join the crew down at Serafino for the charity dinner,” Mike says.

“I’ll be sharing some stories of many of the people that I have met over the journey. Well-known names to most motor sport and motoring enthusiasts, but perhaps facts or situations that are not always spoken about!”

Having led several major events in South Australia and across the country including the successful Adelaide Formula One Grand Prix, his impressive portfolio also includes the V8 Supercars in both Adelaide and Darwin, The South Australian Rally Championship, Classic Adelaide, and the Australian GT Championship to name a few.

“The Grand Prix gained Adelaide and South Australia the reputation of being capable of staging major events at an extremely high standard. It also promoted both the city and the State as an extremely viable location for such events with its friendly, welcoming atmosphere, ease of access, good accommodation and facilities, and a vast array of attractions”.

“I was given the task of staging not only the biggest and most important motorsport event ever held in Australia, but to do so in a manner that exceeded the standard set for Formula One Grand Prix events around the world, it was truly amazing,” Mike says.

Now retired, Mike continues to contribute to the motorsport industry, being one of the active supporters of bringing the Supercars back to Adelaide. He also holds a class record in his 1964 Subaru turbo powered VW Beetle with a speed of 160mph or 260kph when he competed in dry lake racing for Speed Week at Lake Gairdner.

As well as his Volkswagen, Mike enjoys retired life with his other classic vehicles, an MGB GT and Elfin Clubman.

Despite having to be cancelled last year, the charity event was still successful, as $10,000 was donated to the local hospital to repair their pergolas, $5,000 to the Southern Koala and Echidna Rescue for specialist equipment for their new Medical Service Centre, and $500 to the two local CFS units for ongoing equipment supplies.

For $150 a ticket, guests will also enjoy a three-course dinner and drinks package, take part in live and silent auctions and be in the running to win some excellent donated prizes in raffles and door prizes.
