Be The Change Animal Shelter is looking for six foster carers in the southern suburbs and districts who could look after homeless dogs in return for a weekly stipend.
The Shelter rehabilitates and rehomes abandoned, rescued and surrendered animals.
Some have owners who have had to enter aged care, some have been found as strays and not claimed and some have been removed from owners unable to care for them.
Posting on Facebook recently Shelter operators said, “We have found an increased surge in demand for our services and as much as it kills us to say no to any animal we have had to begin turning people away.”
“This is predominantly due to two factors. One being our inability to find suitable foster homes for our dogs and two, being that when people contact us wanting to rehome their animal, they want it gone then and there.
“We have always prided ourselves on being transparent and ethical and we never turn away the hard cases. Just look through our history and portfolios of dogs - we have always said yes when others have said no.
“We understand that this often acts as a barrier to getting some of the dogs into a home especially if they have to be an only pet or are unsuitable with children etc and we are also well aware that placing dogs in kennels is not an ideal option either.
“We have had many sleepless nights recently trying to wrack our brains to come up with a way to get the dogs into foster so that we can continue to help those in need especially in such desperate and trying times when we are a critical service, and we may have a solution.
“We are looking for 6 foster carers in the southern suburbs who can consistently foster within reason in return for a weekly remuneration rate.
“Ideally we are looking for a couple of carers with different situations. Some of these would be ideal if they had no other pets or small children.
“Also, if we could get someone who is home often for our more anxious dogs; we need a real variety to meet different needs of different dogs.
Please contact us if you would like further information or a foster form we would be forever grateful, as would our dogs .
