Freeway traffic disruption starts

Major works began this week on the South-Eastern Freeway and will continue until July.

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport is undertaking major pavement rehabilitation works between the Toll Gate and the Crafers Interchange.

The Australian and South Australian governments have jointly funded (80:20) the $35 million project.

To maximise safety and minimise impact to road users the works will be undertaken at night from Sunday to Friday at the following times:

Sunday evening works will start from 5pm to 6am Monday.

Monday to Friday between 7pm and 6am.

Friday evening works will continue to 8am Saturday.

Day works may also be required on five weekends, where works will be continuous from 7pm Friday through to 6am Monday.

Advance notice will be provided on the details of these weekend works.

In the event of extreme fire danger conditions no works will be undertaken.

The expected six-month schedule will depend on weather.

The works involve removing around 300 millimetres of existing pavement and replacing it with new asphalt.

Major asphalting works such as these were last undertaken on this section of the freeway more than 20 years ago.

The works are intended to ensure the long-term safety and integrity of the freeway for all road users.

The works will be undertaken in stages, with a section of one carriageway (either uphill or downhill) closed at a time and vehicles detoured onto the adjacent carriageway.

During this time, one lane of traffic will operate in the uphill direction and two lanes will operate in the downhill direction, on the one carriageway.
