Two Fleurieu councils and two community groups are among those to benefit from the latest round of coastal protection funding.
In all, ten South Australian councils and six community groups will receive almost $1.1million to help them undertake coastal protection projects.
The projects include building coastal protection structures, studies to assess hazards, beach replenishment and planning for flood emergencies.
The City of Onkaparinga’s clifftop stabilisation protection works will receive $175,000 and Alexandrina Council will receive $75,000 for coastal flood emergency planning and community engagement for Murray estuary settlements.
Non-government organisations received $30,000 of funding in the latest round of the Coastal Protection Board’s annual grant programs.
The non-government organisations have partnered with coastal councils to deliver small-scale coastal management initiatives such as rehabilitation, weed control and revegetation and community education on local coastal management issues.
Local grants are $6,000 to Fleurieu Marine Education, working with the District Council of Yankalilla; and $2,500 to Friends of Granite Island, working with the City of Victor Harbor.
Environment Minister Susan Close says the state’s coastline is the first defence against a changing climate and the coast is often central to regional economies.
“South Australians are lucky to live near such fabulous coastlines and it’s important we continue to manage and protect these for future generations.
“This million dollar plus funding provided by the Coast Protection Board will help do exactly that, supporting delivery of a range of projects across the state to help councils manage their coastal hazard risk.”
The Coast Protection Board’s function is to carry out research or to contribute to the protection, restoration or development of the coast.
Organisations may contact the Board to seek support for research that aligns with its priorities.
