Southern Koala and Echidna Rescue (SKER) is reaching out to the local community for support ahead of its upcoming quiz night fundraiser, scheduled for Saturday 12 October, at the Reynella Neighbourhood Centre.
As well as a night of fun and friendly competition, the event aims to raise $10,000 to cover critical veterinary costs for the region’s sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife.
A registered charity, SKER has been at the forefront of wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, operating a state-of-the-art veterinary clinic that provides essential care to koalas, echidnas, and other native animals.
The organisation relies entirely on donations and fundraising efforts, as it receives no government funding. The funds raised from the quiz night will help SKER continue its crucial work in the community, offering a lifeline to some of Australia's most vulnerable creatures.
"We believe in the power of community," says Mish Simpson, Operations Manager - Southern Koala and Echidna Rescue. "Every donation and every table sold at our quiz night brings us closer to our goal of ensuring that injured wildlife receives the care they need."
In addition to selling tables for the event, SKER is actively seeking donations from local businesses for raffle prizes, the silent auction, and the wine wall. Contributions of products, vouchers, or special items will not only support the cause but also provide local businesses with an opportunity for exposure within the community.
SKER’s efforts extend beyond rescue and rehabilitation; it is also focused on preventing wildlife injuries through public awareness campaigns and advocacy, particularly targeting the reduction of vehicle strikes. Collaboration with universities on research projects aims to develop better strategies for wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.
The quiz night is expected to draw significant attention, with prizes, raffles, and a silent auction adding to the excitement of the evening. SKER hopes that the community will rally behind this cause, either by attending the event, making a donation, or contributing items for the auction.
The event will kick off at 7.30pm, with guests encouraged to arrive by 7pm. Participants can bring their own nibbles, and drinks will be available for purchase. Those interested in attending can still purchase tables for groups of 4, 8, or 10 people.
