Entries are now open for the 15th annual McLaren Vale Vintage & Classic, with its well-loved cavalcade of iconic vehicles scheduled for Sunday 5 April, 2020.
Owners of vintage and classic vehicles, including motorcycles, are encouraged to register and join in the fun of what has become one of the highlights of the McLaren Vale events calendar.
The main event on the Sunday is the street parade of vintage and classic vehicles from 11am. Following the parade, the vehicles move on to 12 selected local wineries, where visitors can move among the vehicle displays and enjoy the best of McLaren Vale hospitality, with the region’s famous wine, produce and music on offer.
The 2019 event attracted more than 500 entries in the parade and a crowd of 20,000 spectators lining the streets. Entries came from as far afield as New South Wales and Queensland. The committee is aiming for a record 600+ entries in 2020. Motorcycle entries are also expected to rise, being the second year motorcycles have been invited to participate in the program.
In 2020, highlights will include Shingleback Wines’ display of vintage, racing and classic motorcycles and Hugo Wines’ showcase of Porsche, Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, BMW and more.
Entrants are again encouraged to dress up in the era of their vehicles, for the chance to win some great prizes.
“We were blown away by how amazing everyone looked dressed up in their finery to match their vehicles in 2019. It was like stepping back in time!” says event organiser Trevor Sharp.
“We’re confident our 2020 entrants will also pull out all the stops.”
There is certainly something unique about this volunteer-led event that has been running for 15 years.
“We are proud of the reputation of this event - it’s truly family friendly and attracts a really good crowd of motoring enthusiasts wanting to show off their passion projects, and others just there for a lovely day out and a bit of nostalgia,” Trevor says.
The committee is currently working with local tourism bodies on accommodation packages to tempt visitors to the event to stay for a while and enjoy the region.
“The support from our fantastic local residents, wineries and sponsors including the City of Onkaparinga is also really important,” Trevor says.
“This support allows us to give back to our community, which is another unique part of the event.”
The committee has now contributed more than $50,000 to the local McLaren Vale & Districts War Memorial Hospital, including a $15,000 donation following the 2019 event. The committee also donated $300 each to the CFS brigades from McLaren Vale and McLaren Flat.
“We’ll soon be announcing a very special guest who’ll be the star attraction of our fundraising dinner, being held at Serafino Wines, McLaren Vale, on Saturday 4 April, 2020, so stay tuned,” says Trevor.
“It’s going to be another great event, so register now, save the date and start planning your costume.”
