The owners of the Heritage Pies and Pastries bakery in Cadell Street in Goolwa have been told to shut their drive-through service by tomorrow.
The Keane family have owned and operated the bakery for more than 20 years and created the drive-through earlier this year, in response to restrictions placed on businesses due to COVID-19.
Alexandrina Council granted a temporary permit for the drive-through in March.
However, they advised the Keane family on Monday that the temporary approval had been revoked and that the drive-through must close by Thursday.
An application for permanent approval has been lodged but a decision is yet to be made.
Customers using the service can phone through their order for coffee and other products.
They then drive through the bakery's rear carpark from Loveday Street to pick up their goods from a side window.
Two carparks at the front of the bakery are blocked off to allow the cars to exit via Cadell Street.
Co-owner of the bakery Vicki Leane expressed her frustration on Facebook saying, “As a business we have done everything possible to stay open throughout this pandemic”.
“We have recreated the way we trade and done it in a manner that has kept our customers serviced and our staff employed.
“Most councils would be applauding our initiative, maybe even helping us.”
She added her thanks to the councillors who had supported the concept.
“Whilst I respect council have the right to enforce this I am feeling gutted for all the mobility impaired and low immune customers who will no longer be able to use this service," she said.
“Let’s hope that common sense will prevail when this goes to council for consideration and what is in the best interest of the general ratepayers will be addressed.
“Unfortunately, the council feels that COVID restrictions have been lifted, however QR check-in and social distancing are still restricting our trade."
Her post received over 100 comments of support within hours.
Many called on Alexandrina Council to reverse the decision.
The Leane family have owned and operated the bakery for more than 20 years.
Michael Leane is also known as 'The Naked Baker' and kept South Coast locals entertained with his many videos and posts during the first COVID-19 lockdown.
