Goolwa/Port Elliot top of the ladder as the GSFLW season resumes

After a four-month break due to COVID-19, the Great Southern Football League Women’s (GSFLW) competition finally resumed on Sunday with four matches in round two.


Goolwa/Port Elliot have gone to the top of the ladder following a convincing 61-point win against Victor Harbor on Sunday in the early game at Willunga Oval. The Magpies led at every change to win 9.8 (62) to 0.1 (1). Catherine Griffen and Asha Bell kicked three goals for the winners with Renee Moon, Griffen, Bell, Megan Hoad and Kaya Angus named in the best players. Demi Morse, Joanne Spriggs, Claudia Rodda, Daisy Blencowe and Mackenzie Worsley were named best for Victor.


Mt Compass remains undefeated after a 28-point win against Yankalilla in the early game at McLaren Vale. The Bulldogs led all day to record a 4.10 (34) to 1.0 (6) victory. Brooke Boileau, Amy Taylor, Taylah Eastwood, Linda Shute, Caroline Scott and Kelly Haverty were named in the best players for the undefeated Mt Compass. Laura Smith, Bonnie Willsmore, Helen Maidment, Leah Bailey, Brittany Bugg and Sophia Nicolis were the best players for Yankalilla.


In the match of the round at McLaren Vale the home team McLaren Eagles had a tight 11-point victory over reigning premier Strathalbyn to remain undefeated in 2020. Brittnie Wyld kicked three goals for the Eagles while Emily Cozamanis slotted two majors for the Roosters. Tiffany Copley was named best for McLaren and she received good support from Layla Rogers, Ally Bailey, Donna Boal and Meg Bentley. Strathalbyn were best served by Courtney Mesecke, Emogen Johnson, Holly Wallace, Indigo Miller and Holly Santibanez.


Willunga notched their first win of the season in the late game at Willunga Oval on Sunday with a 91-point victory over Encounter Bay, 14.7 (91) to 0.0 (0). The Demons led by 32 points at halftime before a devastating eight-goal third quarter blew the lead out to 81 points at the last change. Willunga shared the goals around with nine different goalkickers including Dakota Oniszk (3), Casey Evans (2), Emily Smith (2) and Ella Radbone (2). Ella Radbone was named best on ground for the Demons and she was joined in the best players by Katrice Turner, Kristen Rothwell, Oniszk and Kayla Catford. Georgia Harrington, Kate Sanders and TJ Walkden tried hard all day for the Bays.
