The Granite Island Cafe has opened just in time for the busy October long weekend and school holidays.

Hundreds of tourists made their way across the causeway yesterday in the beautiful spring weather, to test out the new facility which is being run by the Department of Environment and Water.

Local MP David Basham had raised concerns on ABC Radio recently that the cafe would not be able to open by these holidays, as had been promised by Environment Minister Susan Close.

Permanent and casual staff positions for the cafe are currently being advertised.

The previous operators of the cafe, Oceanic Victor, announced in July that they would not be reopening.
