Green light for Almond Blossom Festival

The Willunga Almond Blossom Festival will go ahead from 20 – 22 November.  The festival is usually held in the last week of July but has been delayed this year due to COVID-19.

SA Health has now given the event COVID-19 approval and the celebrations will start from 4pm on Friday, 20 November.

There will be circus performers, market stalls, local musicians, animal petting stations and a chance to meet the growers and discover more about almonds.  Children can also enjoy pony rides and dog agility exhibitions.

An almond cracking competition will take place on the Sunday of the festival.

The festival is expected to be a foodie’s delight with carnival food, wood fired pizza, burgers and many other offerings.

The Festival usually attracts crowds of more than 10 000 and showcases the local area of Willunga. It (usually) celebrates the first blossom of the season, which is an important part of Willunga’s history and landscape.

Almond trees were first commercially planted in Willunga in 1901. Almonds were a major part of Willunga’s economy from the 1930s to the 1970s. Vinyards have replaced many of the groves since then but the town still retains many trees and the blossoms remain a beautiful drawcard for visitors.

The very first Willunga Almond Festival was held in 1969 and featured a Festival Ball and the crowning of the Almond Blossom Queen.
