Time to get in the saddle – there’s just a few days left to have your say on a proposed cycleway between two of the Fleurieu’s iconic townships.

Onkaparinga Council’s Trails and Cycling Strategic Management Plan identified a major east/west cycling network gap between Aldinga and Willunga and there were multiple requests for cycle links between the towns via the South Australian Government’s Fund My Neighbourhood program in 2018.

Council received $150,000 towards an Aldinga-Willunga Cycleway through the program, and several routes have been.

The preferred design is a 6.7-kilometre route, made up of on-road cycling via bike lanes and an off-road shared use path for pedestrians and cyclists, which would provide a direct connection to Aldinga and Willunga.

At an estimated $2.84 million, it’s the lowest cost of the four options investigated and one of the shortest.

The cycleway would build on the city’s credentials as a premier cycling destination, which includes an incredible diversity of scenic roads, trails, parks and tracks.

City of Onkaparinga has hosted the thrilling final stage of the Santos Tour Down Under the past two years, as well as the 2019 Cycling Australia Masters Road National Championships.

Kirk Richardson, City of Onkaparinga Director City Operations, says there is currently no federal, state and/or council funding commitment towards the cycleway.

“However, we’ll continue to explore funding opportunities into the future because the cycleway will provide connections between the Coast to Vines Rail Trail, Willunga and the Aldinga coast once constructed,” he says.
