Over 7300 people in Alexandrina Council live with some sort of disability and at least 2941 people are unpaid carers.
Council is currently asking for feedback on its draft Disability Access and Inclusion Plan via its mysay.alexandrina.sa.gov.au website.
Residents can view the draft plan and provide feedback via an online survey until Friday 17 September.
There will also be two drop-in sessions for people to attend and talk with council staff members about the plan.
The first session will be held in Strathalbyn at the Library on Colman Terrace on Saturday 4 September from 10am to 11.30am.
The second session will be held on the Saturday 11 September from 10am to 11.30am at the Goolwa Library and Council offices in Cadell Street.
Council staff will also be available to come and talk to community groups or organisations. To arrange a visit contact 8555 7000 or email [email protected].
Council asked the community for feedback on how inclusive and accessible their services were for people with disabilities last year. The plan has been informed by this feedback.
The original feedback showed that 76% of respondents did not think they lived in an accessible community. Public amenities, public parks and open spaces were listed as the areas most in need of improvement.
Residents said wheelchair access was limited in all areas of the Council; that more accessible public toilets were needed and that many existing ones had steps leading to them or narrow doors.
More programs for disabled teens and children were also highlighted as a need and support for carers.
Feedback and survey results on the draft Disability Access and Inclusion Plan will be presented to the Council meeting scheduled to be held at the Goolwa Council Chambers at 5pm Monday, 18 October.
