Hazardous material incident at Yankalilla

This morning around 8.30am, CFS crews were called to investigate a hazardous material (HAZMAT) incident at a waste refuge facility at Yankalilla.

A small Hydrochloric Acid spill was discovered after a driver noticed a chemical reaction in household waste in the bucket of a waste loader.

Approximately 20 volunteers on six vehicles, including three specialist HAZMAT trucks, attended the scene and were able to quickly neutralize the spill. One MFS crew also provided support.

The driver was assessed on scene by SA Ambulance.

Incorrect disposal of chemicals can be dangerous, causing fires or harmful fumes. The CFS encourages the community to ensure they are following instructions for proper disposal of hazardous waste including chemicals.

The Yankalilla Waste & Recycling Depot was closed for several hours but has since reopened.

In a Facebook post The District Council of Yankalilla has thanked the CFS and MFS for attending the site to make it safe.

"A resident had placed 5 litre drum of Hydrochloric Acid in their yellow recycling bin, that was then dropped off at Yankalilla Depot by our collection truck. The Hydrochloric Acid drum was damaged when it was then loaded into another larger bin for transport to the processing facility.

"This again highlights the dangers of inappropriately managing hazardous materials. Please dispose of chemicals and batteries responsibly."
