Preliminary Final (2.30pm Saturday 14 September @ Yankalilla)
Willunga lock horns with Mount Compass in the Preliminary Final at Yankalilla on Saturday for the right to play Langhorne Creek in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) Grand Final on September 21. Minor premier Willunga suffered a tight nine-point loss in the second semi-final to Langhorne Creek last week while Mount Compass had a stirring come-from-behind 25-point win over Victor Harbor in the first semi-final.
When these sides last met back in round 10 they played out a thrilling draw at Mount Compass and there’s no reason to think it won’t be another tight affair this week with a Grand Final spot on the line. It will be a real battle of styles with Willunga boasting the tightest defence in the GSFL and Mount Compass the most potent attack, featuring Tom Pinyon with 122 goals and Ziggy Vitkunas with 81 goals this season. While Mount Compass have the ‘Dynamic Duo’ up forward, Willunga has shared their goals around with 10 players kicking 15 or more majors this season.
There will be great battles all over the ground on Saturday with the battle in the ruck between Willunga’s 2019 Mail Medallist Daniel Bass taking on Mount Compass’ 2016 Mail Medallist Peter Hoban. That clash will be worth the admittance price alone!
In one of the closest GSFL seasons in history, this is another game where it’s almost impossible to pick a winner but I’ll go with the minor premier...just. My tip...Willunga by five points.
