Alexandrina Council will begin repairs on an old farm building located in the Ratalang-Basham Beach Conservation Reserve on Monday 3 June.

The contractor will use the gate at Basham’s Beach car park, between Port Elliot and Middleton, for vehicle access.

The council fenced off the old building for public safety reasons in March after receiving an engineering report that advised restricting access to the structure.

A report on the future remediation of the structure was presented at the April council meeting.

It recommended allocation of $90,000 from the Basham Beach Trust to fund the required repair works at the former poultry structure and former farm structure.

Historically the buildings formed part of the Pleasant Banks Homestead, before the Basham Beach Conservation Reserve was created in the 1980s.

The poultry shed had been vandalised in 2023, which prompted the engineering report.

Alexandrina Council’s Ratalang Basham Beach Masterplan 2018, requires protection of areas relating to the European farming heritage.

A former dairy building on the site has also been identified as having severe structural concerns and been fenced off to exclude public access while the Advisory Committee considers its future.

The repair work on the old farm building and poultry shed is expected to be completed in August.
