Keep an eye to the sky this morning (Thursday 7 November) and you might be lucky enough to see some fighter aircraft flying in formation over the Fleurieu Peninsula and other parts of SA.

Up to three F/A-18A/B Hornet pilots originally from Adelaide, Port Pirie, and the Fleurieu Peninsula will man the aircrafts on their SA flyover.

The multi-role fighter aircraft are based at RAAF Base Tindal in the Northern Territory and are in South Australia to participate in the Edinburgh Air Show on 9 and 10 November at RAAF Base Edinburgh.

The aircraft will be flying at 300 feet over water, and 500 feet over built up areas.

Here is the schedule for the Fleurieu section of the route. Timings are approximate and flying is subject to change due to weather, air traffic control and operational requirements.

  • 11.30am - Goolwa
  • 11.40 am - Victor Harbor Bluff
  • 11.45am - Sellicks Beach.

The Hornets will be coming through Port Pirie and the Yorke Peninsula earlier in the day, then Mannum and Murray Bridge before getting to Goolwa. After Sellicks Beach, they’ll head northward to Port Adelaide and over the Adelaide CBD.

Measuring 17.1 m in length and 4.7 m in height, the Hornets are manufactured by Boeing.

They are capable of flying at a speed of Mach 1.8 (2,2000 km/hr) and flying 2,700 km without refueling.
