The SA Whale Centre has reported that even though the season officially ended over the weekend (traditionally May to October), we have two stragglers at Hallett Cove that are putting on a show for a small group of whale watchers. Two adult Humpback whales arrived late on Sunday afternoon and have been in the area ever since. They have been feeding, tail slapping, breaching and travelling around the Hallett Cove area.
Humpback whales are Baleen whales that also eat fish, so they have been taking advantage of snacking on large schools of fish in the area before they head back to Antarctica. We tend to see random Humpbacks on the "Humpback Highway" at the start and end of the whale season, as they go further up the west and east coast of Australia.
According to the centre, it is still incredibly important to maintain social distancing when out whale watching this season and to keep washing or sanitising your hands whenever possible. The centre encourages everyone to get out and about to have a look for whales but urges the public to do it safely and respectfully.
Keep your eyes peeled and if you do see a whale, remember to call the SA Whale Centre on 08 8551 0750, send them a message on their Facebook page or enter a report online at www.sawhalecentre.com.au.
