'Hunger Hot Spot' Victor to get weekly Foodbank visits

Foodbank will visit Victor Harbor every Friday to provide food relief to those in need on the Fleurieu.

The move comes after a 2020 report highlighted the town as a ‘Hunger Hot Spot' and that an additional 8000 meals needed to be distributed per month to meet the growing demand.

The CEO of Foodbank SA, Greg Pattison, says, “Foodbank have been working with agencies on the Fleurieu for nearly a decade, from providing low cost or free food to agencies, supporting local school programs and the provision of hundreds of Christmas and Every day hampers to those in need”

“In 2020, a Report on food insecurity highlighted that Victor Harbor was a ‘Hunger Hot Spot’, quite simply we weren’t getting enough food to those in need of food relief in the region.

“In fact, the report stated that only 3 per cent of those experiencing food insecurity in the Victor Harbor were able to access enough food relief to meet their requirements.

“We need to distribute an additional 8,000 meals per month to meet the growing levels of demand.

“As a result, we will work with agencies in the region to refer clients to the Foodbank Mobile Food Hub now offered in Victor Harbor.

“Testament to Foodbank’s commitment Foodbank have established a weekly run of our Mobile Food Hub to Victor Harbor.

Working with key charity agencies in the area, particularly, this service will allow hundreds of families to access food via a dignified shopping experience.”

The report also found that food insecurity has seen a significant level of growth across the state in the last 12 months, with those living in country towns 33 per cent more likely to require food relief than those in a metro area.

The Mobile Food Hub will visit the Victor Harbor Baptist Church on Fridays from 11pm to 1pm. It will offer low-cost food and free fruit and vegetables.

A referral voucher is required to use Foodbank services. Referring agencies include the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul and the Victor Harbor Baptist Church. More information is available via 8351 1136.
