Information sessions for prospective councillors

South Australian council elections are due in November and the Local Government Association (LGA) is offering free information sessions to anyone interesting in running as a candidate.


The two-hour Make a Difference - Nominate for Council sessions are offered face-to-face in Adelaide and as an online webinar for those in regions who can't get to the city.


The aim to assist in understanding the role of an Elected Member for those interested in making a difference to the broader community by contributing strategically to the decision making process local councils.


Topics covered include:

 

·       The role and functions of a council.

·       Relationship between councils and other spheres of government.

·       Role of an Elected Member.

·       Allowances and expenses.

·       Legal responsibilities.

·       How elections are conducted.

·       Eligibility and the process of nomination.

·       Campaigning for election.

 

The next webinar is scheduled for Saturday 23 July from 10am-12noon. Register to attend with the LGA.


Individual councils may also offer candidate information sessions as election time approaches. Visit Alexandrina Council, City of Onkaparinga, City of Victor Harbor and District Council of Yankalilla for information.
