Journalist and historian to speak at Victor breakfast

Renowned journalist and author Lainie Anderson will speak at the 2024 Fleurieu women’s community awards breakfast at Encounter Bay Football Club on Friday 8 March.

The awards are organised by the Victor Harbor VIEW Club in conjunction with Finniss MP David Basham.

Lainie Anderson started in journalism 35 years ago at Mildura’s Sunraysia Daily.

She has since written for The Times, London; Adelaide’s Sunday Mail; Melbourne’s Herald Sun; and has been public relations manager for SA tourism commission.

She published her debut novel Long Flight Home in 2019, the tale of the first air race from England to Australia after World War I.

“I’d like to sell copies of my book Long Flight Home and DVD The Greatest Air Race ($30 each or $50 for both) and will donate $5 from every sale to the VIEW club charities.” Ms Anderson says.

Named 2023 Emerging Historian of the Year, she has joined the History Council’s executive committee.

She is currently exploring the life of South Australia’s Kate Cocks, who in 1915 became the first policewoman in the British Empire employed on same salary and with same powers of arrest as men.

David Basham says Lainie Anderson is a fantastic guest speaker and the breakfast is an opportunity not to be missed.

“Lainie is a journalist that I have respected for many years.

“She has shown deep compassion for others through stories written on the difficulties of dairy farmers during the $1 milk campaign and voluntary work promoting Voluntary Assisted Dying Legislation.”

Tickets are $30 available from Trybooking and funds raised from a raffle on the day will contribute to The Smith Family Charity.
