Kangarilla upset Maccy

Hills Football League (Division 2) - Round 17

Kangarilla upset local rival Macclesfield by 14 points at Kangarilla Oval on Saturday. It was just the fifth victory of the season for the Double Blues. The loss won’t affect Macclesfield’s finals hopes as they will finish in fifth position and play in the Elimination Final on Sunday 25 August. It was a tight opening half with the script going to plan for the visitors as they took an eight point lead into the long break. Kangarilla came out with a very strong defensive effort after the break to keep Macclesfield goal-less in the second half while kicking four goals of their own to win 9.7 (61) to 6.11 (47). Jamie Grosser was strong up forward for Kangarilla with four goals while Daniel Noble played a lone hand for the Bloods with three goals. Best players for Kangarilla were Tyler Virgo, Adrian Albanese and Reece Bourne. Maccy’s best were Isaac Lallard, Jack Reynolds and Daniel Dempsey.

Meadows notched up just their second win of the season with a comprehensive 61-point victory over bottom placed Torrens Valley at Mount Pleasant. The home side were kept scoreless in the first quarter as Meadows shot out to a 20-point lead at  the first change. The Bulldogs extended their lead by half-time to 41 points. A goal-less third term for both clubs followed before Meadows ran out winners 9.14 (68) to 0.7 (7). Jacob Comley kicked four goals for Meadows while Darren Virgo was adjudged best on ground. For the home side, Brandon Bormann was named his teams best player for the third week in a row.

Kersbrook continued their unbeaten season with a comfortable 29-point victory in the grand final rematch against Ironbank Cherry Gardens at Ironbank Oval. The final score was 9.17 (71) to 6.6 (42). Kersbrook held Ironbank to just two goals in the first half and their 25-point lead could’ve been much greater if not for their inaccurate kicking of 5.10 at half-time. The Thunderers tried hard in the second half but couldn’t bridge the gap after a poor first half. Layton McMahon kicked three goals for the Brookers while Hamish Irwin was the only multiple goal kicker for Ironbank with two. Jack Mozuras was named best for Kersbrook and he was ably supported by Paul James and Aaron McAlpine while for the reigning premiers James Cross, Daniel Philp and Irwin were solid.

Gumeracha secured their 10th win of season 2019 with a 48-point away win at Birdwood. The win draws the Magpies level with Bridgewater-Callington in the battle for third spot. The visitors led at every change to win 10.14 (74) to 3.8 (26). Ben and Sam Hanna each kicked two goals for the Magpies with Ben being named best on ground to continue his fine season. Jake Maczkowiack, Brandon Ashby and Nicholas Schild were the Roosters’ best.

Bridgewater-Callington had the bye.
