As New Year’s Eve celebrations light up South Australia tonight, RSPCA South Australia is urging pet owners to take extra precautions to protect their animals from the stress caused by fireworks.

The loud explosions can be highly distressing to pets, often leading to animals fleeing their homes and, in some cases, becoming injured or killed while trying to escape.

“We want everyone to start 2025 safe and sound, including our community’s precious animals,” says RSPCA SA spokesperson Carolyn Jones. “The sound of fireworks carries far and wide, but those living near display locations need to be especially vigilant.”

Fireworks displays are scheduled across Adelaide, including Elder Park, Semaphore, Glenelg, Brighton, and Salisbury North, as well as in numerous regional areas such as Victor Harbor, Port Lincoln, Mount Gambier, and Wallaroo.

Tips to Keep Pets Safe:

  • Microchip and ID: Ensure pets are microchipped with up-to-date details and are wearing ID tags in case they escape.
  • Keep Pets Indoors: Keep pets inside with windows closed, curtains drawn, and plenty of food and water.
  • Stay with Pets: If possible, stay home to comfort your pets and reward calm behavior with treats.
  • Secure Yards: Double-check that outdoor areas are secure if pets must remain outside.
  • Pre-Firework Preparation: Exercise and feed pets before the displays begin to help them settle.
  • Use Calming Aids: Consider using items like “thunder jackets” for dogs, which can help reduce stress.

Lost or Found Pets:

  • If your pet goes missing:
  • Act Quickly: Contact local councils and veterinary clinics, and check council pounds and shelters in person.
  • Post Online: Use social media and lost pet platforms to share a photo and description of your pet.
  • Spread the Word: Distribute posters and flyers around your neighborhood.

If you find a stray animal, contain it safely if possible and check for any identification. Contact local councils or animal shelters to reunite the pet with its owner.
