KI art space moves forward

An art space and cultural centre on Kangaroo Island is a step closer with formation of a not-for-profit company to take the proposal forward.

Art Museum KI Ltd has grown from a group of local artists who have been dedicated to creating the art space for several years.

Chair Rob Brookman is a former director of the Adelaide Festival and co-founder of Womadelaide.

He told ABC Radio on Wednesday 3 January that Kangaroo Island council has given in principle support to build the cultural attraction on crown land just outside Kingscote.

“The site overlooks the Bay of Shoals and sits in the middle of nature within walking distance of Kingscote.”

Art Museum KI hopes to secure the site in the next 3 to 4 months, after further community consultation.

Mr Brookman estimates the cost of building the museum to be $20 million, which would be sourced from state and federal grants, as well as private philanthropists.

He says they have developed a business case that demonstrates long-term sustainability and economic and social value to Kangaroo Island.

They have already raised the funds for the design stage and have been working with one of Australia’s top architects, Kirstin Thompson.

As well as an art gallery, the design will include a café and a multi-use community space and outdoor area, which could be used for small-scale performances.

Mr Brookman describes it as a modest-sized building with the capacity for 400 to 500 visitors each day.

He says that while the art museum would contribute to tourism, it must also be a place for Islanders and would serve as a community hub.

“Kangaroo Island lacks cultural spaces and needs cultural attractions, as well as its natural assets and produce such as gin and honey."
