As Kangaroo Island faces ongoing dry conditions, several local farmers have made dam water available to support fellow primary producers struggling with stock water shortages.
Councillor and farmer Sam Mumford, along with Bill Buttrose and KI Lands, have each opened access to their dam water to the island’s agricultural community.
Mayor Michael Pengilly has praised the initiative, acknowledging the generosity of local farmers in supporting their neighbours.
He has also urged Kangaroo Island Landscape Board to adopt a supportive approach during this challenging period, recognising the pressure on local farming families.
"This is what our community does best, looking after each other. I commend Sam Mumford, Bill Buttrose, and KI Lands for stepping up to offer stock water at a time when it is needed most. With our farmers under significant pressure, these contributions provide much-needed relief," he says.
"We know how tough conditions are at the moment, and the Council is committed to working with the community and other government agencies to find practical solutions. I urge any farmers struggling with stock water shortages to take advantage of these offers and seek additional support if needed."

Drought Conditions on Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island has experienced a significantly dry start to 2025, with local rainfall well below average. The prolonged dry conditions have led to increased demand for stock water as dams dry up.
Mayor Pengilly says the strain on local primary producers and encourages farmers to reach out for support.
"This dry spell is one of the worst we have seen in recent years, and our farmers are doing it tough. While we hope for rain soon, we must continue to support each other and make the most of available resources.
"Council is committed to advocating for assistance where needed, and I encourage farmers to take advantage of the relief measures available to them."
