KI gains more international attention

Kangaroo Island has been named one of Time Magazine’s World's Greatest Places for 2023 describing it as 'rising from the ashes'.

It has been a big year of national and international recognition for South Australia’s largest island and it's still only March.

In January the New York Times named the iconic island in its top ten places to visit in 2023.

Then Tourism Australia named Stokes Bay the nation’s best beach in its annual assessment of coastal getaways.

Time writer Jen Rose Smith cited Kangaroo Island’s resilience and sustainability, in the wake of the Black Summer bushfires, as key in its appeal.

She lauded the recovery work that has seen species and vegetation recover and infrastructure rebuilt to be fire-resistant and environmentally sensitive.

KI Mayor Michael Pengilly told ABC radio that more international recognition for the island’s natural attractions was welcome.

He said recovery was booming and locals were coping well with the influx of visitors, but transport to and from the island could be improved, with insufficient flights and the ferry journey expensive and time consuming.
