Shannon Davis will be awarded the Kangaroo Island 2023 Young Achiever of the Year at this year’s Settlement Day ceremony next Thursday 27 July. 

Kangaroo Island will observe its 187th Settlement Day ceremony at the Pioneer Memorial on the Esplanade at Kingscote. 

The ceremony will begin at 10.15 am for a 10.30am start and is open for the public to attend. 

The official ceremony will be followed by a Settlement Day morning tea at the Kingscote Council Chambers, hosted by the Hope Cottage Museum as part of the National Trust of Australia. 

Young people of Kangaroo Island are recognised for their achievements on Settlement Day. 

The Young Achiever of the Year award recognises a young person who has demonstrated leadership, dedication and significant personal accomplishment or active involvement in their community. 

Mayor Michael Pengilly says this year Shannon Davis was named Young Achiever of the Year after a rigorous selection process involving excellent nominations. 

"Shannon’s commitment to his academic studies and his community goes above and beyond expectations." 

He says Shannon has demonstrated significant achievements, including selection as a mentor for the 2023 KICE DIVE & Leadership Camp and is also one of a select few South Australian Area School Leaders Association Rural Youth Ambassadors. 

Shannon sought opportunities and challenges for personal growth and development that includes working toward the Silver Award in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Program. 

He was also successful in his application to attend the Maritime Immersion Camp at the Australian Maritime College and University of Tasmania’s Launceston facilities in Tasmania. 

Shannon’s community contribution includes participation in the ADF Cadet program and AFX Cadet Camps. 

He is also an active sporting member of the Parndana Sports Club and played football and basketball for many years. 

“Shannon’s accomplishments are a direct result of his hard work and outstanding attitude,” Mayor Pengilly says.
