Kite surfer threatened after whale incidents

A 32-year-old kite surfer from Old Reynella says he has received threats after being charged with two counts of molestation of a protected animal.

SA Police charged the man after they received reports of a kitesurfing going close to a whale and a calf off Christies Beach last Friday and Saturday.

According to a Facebook post made today he has asked the Encounter Whales - Southern Right Whale Conservation & Protection group page to remove posts relating to the incidents after receiving threats.

He has also asked the group administrator to pass on his “sincere apologies” to those distressed and upset by his actions.

The man also told the group he was unaware of the guidelines and regulations but acknowledged that it was no excuse.

Kitesurfing South Australia have released the following media release in response to the charges.

"Kitesurfing South Australia (KSA) have been made aware of an incident involving a kite surfer and a whale at Christies Beach on 2 July and again on 3 July."

Current laws and regulations prohibit personal watercraft being within 100m of an adult or 300m if there is a calf involved or another vessel on the water. For reference please see; https://www.sawhalecentre.com.au/wha.../whale-watching-tips/."

Whales are majestic creatures and whilst the temptation to get up close and personal is strong we must also respect the rationale and protection around this endangered species."

We remind South Australian kite surfers to be aware that our actions are constantly under scrutiny and that responsible use of our waters is crucial for the health of our sport and maintaining our access."

SA Police have been notified of the incidents and KSA are in communication with involved parties."

The individual involved a local kite surfer at Christies Beach, is apologetic for his actions and has agreed to give the whales their space and not kite surf there until the whales have moved on."

The man has been bailed to appear in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on 2 August.
