Humans and dogs can return to the waters of Lake Alexandrina and the Goolwa Channel with an SA Health water quality update lifting a water quality alert.
SA Health advises it is now safe to resume swimming, diving or other activities that may involve accidental ingestion of water in the Goolwa Channel and other areas of Lake Alexandrina.
The latest water quality results show the river water no longer has elevated levels of potentially harmful blue green algae Cylindrospermopsis present.
The warning to avoid the water had been in place for three months, since testing identified elevated levels of potentially harmful blue green algae.
The same form of algae closed Lake Alexandrina to swimming and diving from March to August in 2024.
It is not related to the ongoing marine 𝘒𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘮𝘪𝘬𝘪𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘪 microalgae bloom currently affecting beaches on the Fleurieu Peninsula and other parts of the state.
