Laklinyeri Beach House celebrates five yearsThe Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation ‘Laklinyeri’ Beach House, located within the picturesque Encounter Lakes in Victor Harbor.

For families with children who have complex medical needs, the idea of a family holiday can seem impossible. However, the Women’s & Children’s Hospital (WCH) Foundation has made this dream a reality for over 160 families since 2019 with the opening of the Laklinyeri Beach House in Victor Harbor.

This unique, medically equipped holiday home was built to provide a sanctuary where families can create lasting memories together.

This August marks the fifth anniversary of the Beach House, a milestone celebrated by the WCH Foundation and the Halfpenny family.

Emma and Wayne Halfpenny, along with their daughter Jessika, were the first family to stay at the Beach House after it opened. Jessika, diagnosed with Epidermolysis Bullosa and Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy, enjoyed special moments there until her passing in 2023 at the age of 13.

Returning to the Beach House to honor Jessika's memory, Emma Halfpenny says being back is a mixture of both happiness and sadness. "Those precious memories mean so much to us since her passing. While they are bittersweet, we are forever grateful for having the opportunity to create them."

Verity Gobbett, Head of Mission at WCH Foundation, expresses pride in the impact the Beach House has had on families. "We cannot change the outcomes for families, but we can provide them with a perfect sanctuary away from their everyday challenges to relax and spend quality time together," she says.

"The Beach House leaves families with stronger relationships, cherished memories, and a shared sense of togetherness."

Each family's stay is fully funded by the WCH Foundation, thanks to generous community donations. As the Beach House celebrates its fifth birthday, the foundation invites the community to continue supporting this vital program, ensuring that more families can experience the joy of a holiday together.
