Langhorne Creek grapes make wine ripe for cellaringGrapes from Langhorne Creek have been used in a wine that's been given the nod by wine guru James Halliday.

Australian wine guru James Halliday has raised a glass to a wine made from Fleurieu-grown grapes in his latest edition of Cellaring Selections.

Halliday’s Wine Companion released the Cellaring Selections mini-magazine last month, listing around 50 top-rating wines that are ideal for laying down.

Among them is the 2016 Auld Family Strawbridge Langhorne Creek Cabernet Sauvignon, by Auld Family Wines, a Barossa Valley-based winery.

The publication suggests the wine, which retails for $42, could be cellared up to 2036.

The author sings the praises of grapes grown in the Langhorne Creek region, which, “can be relied on to produce shiraz and cabernet sauvignon full of flavour, but without strong tannins or alcohol impeding the course of the fruit's passage across and along the palate.”

The grapes for the 2016 Auld Family Strawbridge Langhorne Creek Cabernet Sauvignon were handpicked and sorted, and the wine open fermented and matured in French hogsheads (barrels, usually made of oak) for 12 months.

The wine is 14 per cent alcohol.

In stark contrast to this year’s Cellaring Selections, the Cellaring Selections released by Halliday’s Wine Companion in May 2019 included dozens of Fleurieu Peninsula-based wineries and wines made from local grapes.

They may be a little harder to get your hands on, but Halliday insists they’ll cellar well.
