Alexandrina Mayor Keith Parkes has called on the community to get involved and vote for one of the three local towns nominated in the 2022 SA Agricultural Town of the Year awards.

Langhorne Creek, Mount Compass and Strathalbyn are among the 54 regional towns nominated.

The award recognises regional towns that are excelling in agriculture and the flow-on effect this has on townships and the community. 

Entering the awards provides regional communities with opportunities to reflect on their contributions to South Australia's primary industries, regional development and an increased awareness of their town and agricultural contribution. 

“It is important to recognise these towns and their great diversity, resilience and creativity and the award creates a perfect opportunity to do that,” Mayor Parkes says. 

“The driving force behind these towns are the generational farming families, rich in agricultural history and tradition. Along with the commitment local producers have to agriculture with their passion and resilience. They are inspirational to the rest of the community.” 

Langhorne Creek offers grapes, livestock meat and wool in the agriculture sector. 

Mount Compass focuses on the livestock, dairy and horticulture industry in its farming practices. Local initiatives include export programs, Harvest the Fleurieu showcasing regional produce and the Mount Compass School engaging in agriculture projects. 

Strathalbyn has a long history of farming with family farms dating back generations. It also encourages Women in Agriculture with a local organisation that has the oldest rural women’s group in Australia with a state-wide branch network based in Strathalbyn.

Two more Fleurieu towns, McLaren Vale and Willunga, have also been nominated in the awards.
