The City of Onkaparinga is asking people to stay away from the Leopard Seal that has been sighted along the coastline for the past few days.


The Leopard Seal was resting on Moana Beach yesterday, prompting a council warning for people to stay away from it for their own safety.


It is It is illegal to approach marine mammals on land or at sea and people can be fined.


Leopard Seals are large predators with aggressive behaviour and may present a potential risk to humans.


National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia and Australian Marine Wildlife Research & Rescue Organisation Inc. (AMWRRO) are aware of the seal and its location.


An assessment of the seal has been made and rangers say it is not injured, just tired and resting before making its way home.


Leopard Seals are native to the Antarctic region.


A council warning said, "Leopard seals are not a friendly seal so please do not approach or let your children or dogs approach the seal."


"We advise people and animals to keep a distance of at least 100 metres away from the seal. We thank you for your cooperation."
