Macclesfield bounce back with big win in Hills Football League

Macclesfield have hit back after their round one loss to Meadows with a thumping 138-point victory over Torrens Valley in round two of the Hills Football League (HFL) Country Division on Saturday. The home team led all day by 28 points at quarter time, 51 at half time, 81 points at three quarter time before eventually winning 24.20 (164) to 4.2 (26). Maccy shared the goals around with 12 players hitting the scoreboard including Zac Cameron and Luke Andruszkiewicz with four goals apiece. Riley Daykin was adjudged best on ground for the Blood and Tars and he was well supported by Reece Jolly, Jesse McCarthy, Ben Flood and Daniel Dempsey.


Ironbank-Cherry Gardens have gone to the top of the premiership ladder with a convincing 62-point win at home over perennial finalist Kersbrook. After a tight opening quarter saw the home side lead by just four points, the Thunderers opened up a handy 29-point lead at the main break after a five goal to one second term. It was more of the same in the third quarter with Ironbank-Cherry Gardens kicking a further six goals to Kersbrook’s one to lead by 64 points at the last change before an even last quarter saw the home side win 17.18 (120) to 7.16 (58). Padthaway recruit Josh Vandermeer was best on ground with nine goals for Ironbank-Cherry Gardens and he was well supported up forward by Jeremy Johncock who snagged three majors. Vandermeer was joined in the Thunderers best players by Rhys Van Paridon, Matthew Raitt, James Cross and Will Muirden. Peter Masika was the only multiple goalkicker for the Brookers with two goals. Aaron Killian, Brett James, Simon Ebert, Paul Delucia and Flynn Cameron were amongst the best players for Kersbrook.


Reigning premier Gumeracha continued their perfect start to the 2020 season with a grinding 10-point win over Bridgewater-Callington at Bridgewater Oval. The home side started well to lead by seven points at quarter time but the ‘Magpie Machine’ got rolling in the second stanza to take a 24-point lead into the main break. The Raiders battled on well to outscore Gumeracha six goals to three in the second half before eventually going down 12.14 (86) to 11.10 (76). Scott Mumford, Ben Hanna, Brendon Moon and Rob McCard each kicked two goals for Gumeracha while Alistair Fleming led the way for Bridgewater-Callington with four majors. Hanna was best on ground and he was joined on the best players list for the Magpies by Braden Hutt, Matthew Redden, Danny Leith and Lachlan Carpenter. Nathan Rowlands, Jackson Hooper, Shaun Steele, Alfie Wenk and Will Bryars were best for the Raiders.


Birdwood made the long trip to Kangarilla and it would’ve been an enjoyable trip home as the Roosters emerged with their first win of the season following a comprehensive 17.7 (109) to 10.8 (68) victory. The win was set up in the first half with Birdwood taking a handy 24-point into the main break. The home side gave themselves a chance with a good third term to reduce the margin to 21 points at the last change but a five goal to two final quarter from the visitors saw Birdwood home to a 41-point triumph. Josh Sykes was a star up forward for Birdwood with six goals and he was well supported by Christian Elliott who slotted five majors. Best on ground Justin Sheedy chipped in with three goals as well. Joining Sheedy in the best players for the Roosters were Jarred Jones, Elliott, Sykes and Fraser Gehrich. Matthew Collie, Jack Unger, Gabriel Ellis and Joseph Carapetis all kicked two goals for Kangies with Tyler Virgo, Adrian Albanese, Jake Corstens, Brendan Hillier and Collie named in the best players.
