McLaren Districts cause major boilover in Great Southern Women's Football

McLaren Districts caused a major upset after defeating reigning premier Willunga by 11 points at McLaren Vale during round four action of the FPAG ‘A’ Grade Women’s competition in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) on Saturday. The Eagles got off to a fast start as they kicked the first three goals of the match to lead by 16 points at quarter time. Willunga hit back with two goals in the second quarter to cut the margin to just three points at halftime. Neither side kicked a goal in the third term as McLaren Districts turned for home with a slender two-point lead. The Eagles steadied, kicking two goals in the last quarter, as they won 5.1 (31) to 2.8 (20). Kiahni Russell kicked three goals for McLaren Districts, while Jessica Harris and Ada Anninos were the goalkickers for Willunga. Best players for the Eagles were Emma Gryczewski, Layla Rogers, Russell, Jessica Hutton, and Ally Bailey. Best for Willunga included Eden Coleman, Shannen Hiern, Harris, Emma Leask, and Cleo Guilfoyle.


Goolwa/Port Elliot are now the only undefeated team in the competition following their 129-point win against Myponga-Sellicks at Myponga last Friday night. The Magpies led by 39 points at quarter time, 71 points at halftime, and 98 points at the last change, before winning 19.15 (129) to 0.0 (0). Goolwa/Port Elliot had eight different goalkickers with Renee Moon leading the way with six goals. Moon was well supported by Rosie Shaw who kicked four goals, while Rachel Wood, Tayla Hoad, and Kerrie-Ann Moon kicked two majors each. Best players for the Magpies were Laura Jones, Rosie Shaw, Tessa Grant, Indi Miller, and Renee Moon. Myponga-Sellicks were best served by Felicity Whiley, Sophie Magor, Imogen Harney, Caroline Scott, and Kyrah Hope. 


Victor Harbor won their first game of the season with a tight six-point win against Yankalilla/Encounter Bay Stingrays at Encounter Bay last Friday night. Yankalilla/Encounter Bay played a good first half as they took a seven-point lead to the long break. ‘Victor’ hit back in the second half, kicking two goals to none, to win 4.4 (28) to 3.4 (22). Helen Maidment kicked two goals for the Stingrays, while their best players included Georgia Weatherspoon, Erin Smith, Zoe Lush, Kate Sanders, and Kimberly Robinson.
