McLaren to face Willunga in GSFLW decider

McLaren Eagles bounced back after losing the second semi-final to Willunga last week to make it through to their third consecutive Great Southern Football League Women’s (GSFLW) Grand Final following an 11-point win in the preliminary final against a brave Mount Compass outfit at Yankalilla. The Eagles will be hoping for a case of  ‘third time lucky’, having lost the previous two grand finals to Strathalbyn. McLaren bounced out of the blocks to take a handy 15-point lead at quarter time. Mount Compass fought back in the second term to reduce the margin to just nine points at the long break. The Eagles re-grouped at halftime and stormed to a 30-point lead at the last change thanks to a 3.3 to 0.0 third quarter. Mount Compass battled hard in the final stanza but ultimately went down 6.8 (44) to 5.3 (33). Tahlita Buethke kicked three goals for McLaren in a best on ground performance. Kelly Nijhuis also kicked three goals for the winners. No details were supplied by Mount Compass.

In the under 16 girls preliminary final, Mount Compass defeated Yankalilla 7.3 (45) to 2.2 (14) to set up a grand final rematch against Willunga. Willunga beat Compass in the 2019 decider and went straight through to this year's grand final after a two point win over the Bulldogs in the second semi-final.
