 Middleton CFS needs new members

The Middleton CFS is calling for new members.

Captain Mel Crawford says they ideally need new volunteers in their 20s, 30s and 40s but that all comers are welcome.

“We’re such a small brigade; we really need bums on seats for the trucks,” she says.

“Don’t be scared. You can break down the tasks into basics and there is lots of in-house training. You learn about the different hoses, the branches and pumps.”

Currently the brigade has 13 members, which enables them to keep operating but they need more people to share the load as summer approaches.

CFS volunteer duties can be done around work and home commitments. “Volunteer when you can,” Mel says. “Only attend a call out when you can.”

Middleton CFS generally provide fire cover and assist the police with traffic management after accidents.

All new volunteers complete a basic fire-fighting course and all uniform is provided free of charge. The brigade trains each Monday from 7.30pm, “for an hour or two”.

Volunteers do not need to have a truck licence but there is potential assistance to gain one, if they wish.

All volunteers do need a police check, which is paid for by the CFS.

The minimum age to become a volunteer is 18 (under 18s can become cadets through the through the Hindmarsh Valley CFS).
