In a bid to improve road safety and the regional economy, Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island councils will receive federal funding for local road projects.

The more than $4 million announced last week will be distributed to local councils through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

Some of the councils are still working through which projects they will deliver, however according to Member for Mayo Rebekha Sharkie, work will include an upgrade to Hay Flat Road - a popular unsealed tourist route to Ingalalla Falls - by the District Council of Yankalilla, and shoulder widening at Waitpinga Road between Mill Road and Range Road by the City of Victor Harbor.

“All of these projects will improve road safety in our community and inject money into our local economy," Rebekha says.

“Given the economic hits our community has taken with the bushfires and now the COVID-19 restrictions, putting money into shovel-ready projects in our local communities with an emphasis on local material procurement will boost employment and business confidence.”

The deadline for project delivery is 1 July 2021.

The new Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program provides $500 million across Australia for local government to deliver priority projects.

Funding provided to local councils included:

  • Alexandrina Council - $685,920
  • Kangaroo Island Council - $487,807
  • City of Onkaparinga - $2,463,485
  • City of Victor Harbor - $355,740
  • District Council of Yankalilla - $245,369
