The Victor Harbor headspace satellite mental health service for young people officially opened on Monday 17 February.
The south coast service was introduced to meet strong demand for specialist mental health services for young people in the area.
Guest speaker Rebekha Sharkie MP welcomed the expansion of headspace into the south coast, saying it was a privilege as Member for Mayo to support the campaign for better services.
“It was the young people of our community who began campaigning for a full service headspace centre in the Hills in early 2017.
“The group collected nearly 500 signatures for a petition calling for a headspace service which I then presented to the Parliament.
“Since then the demand for headspace service has grown in our region, which everyone involved in youth mental health knew would be the case.
“In December 2018 Health Minister Greg Hunt announced that $800,000 would be shared between the two regional centres, here and Mount Barker, this financial year to expand and set up satellite services.
“From 2019-20, a total of $760,000 a year (or $380 000 each) for three years will be provided to operate these two services.
“This centre means more young people will get the support they need and young people on the south coast have much better access to youth-specific services than they ever had in the past.”
The Victor Harbor headspace office is at 10 Crozier Road and opens Monday to Thursday from 9am to 5pm.
