More suspicious fires at Aldinga

Two separate scrub fires started at Aldinga on Saturday night are being treated as suspicious.

A SAPOL spokesperson says that at about 10.15pm on Saturday 8 February police were called to Aldinga Beach in relation to two separate scrub fires.

The CFS attended and extinguished the fires. Crime scene investigators assessed the scene and SAPOL says although the cause of the fires is undetermined they are considered to be suspicious.

An Adelaide man was arrested in January and accused of using fireworks to start two fires at a vacant grass block at Aldinga Beach on 28 December.  He was granted bail by the Supreme Court on January 15. A magistrate had previously refused his application for bail.

There have been a spate of suspicious fires in the area in recent months. The Aldinga Netball Club’s clubrooms were badly damaged by a suspected arson attack in August 2019. They have since been demolished and are to be rebuilt with the help of the City of Onkaringa. Police have not yet charged anyone in relation to that fire.

Police strongly encourage the reporting of any suspicious activity, persons or vehicles, day or night, via the police assistance line on 131 444.  In an emergency, ring Triple Zero.

Anyone with information about the recent fires is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online
