Morphett Vale stun Noarlunga to stay undefeated in the Southern Football League

In a major upset, Morphett Vale came from 20 points down at three quarter time to defeat 2019 grand finalists Noarlunga at Morphett Vale in round two action of the Southern Football League (SFL). It was the second week in a row that Noarlunga have blown a seemingly match winning lead at the last change. In a low scoring first half, Noarlunga led 2.3 (15) to 2.0 (12) at the long break. The visitors stretched their lead out to 20 points at the final change but it could easily have been more after kicking an inaccurate 3.6 in the third term. The Emus came out full of running in the final quarter to kick five goals to zero to win 8.2 (50) to 5.11 (41). Nathan Bayly was the leading forward on the ground with three goals for Morphett Vale while Nick Robertson kicked two for the Shoes. Bodie Sowter, Aiden Baker, Daniel Bode, Michael Smith and Jack Langdon were named as Morphett Vale’s best players. Robertson, Kevin Opperman, Nathan Schulz, Ben Goldfinch and Troy Johnson were best for Noarlunga.

Christies Beach have launched another big comeback, this time against Reynella, to keep their undefeated season intact. The home side Reynella got off to a great start to lead by 31 points at the first break. After an even second quarter Reynella still led by 29 points at halftime. Christies Beach raced back into the game with a five goal to two third term to only trail by six points at three quarter time before overwhelming the Wine Flies in the final stanza to kick another six goals to two to win by 24 points, 13.16 (94) to 11.4 (70). Blake Carter kicked five goals for the Saints while Daniel Nobes kicked four. Josh Frisby, Callan Semple, Brad Potter and Bailey Marshman kicked two goals each for Reynella. For a second week in a row, Michael Mazey was named best for Christies and he was joined in the best players by Jacob Crate, Ryan Parry, Carter and Josiah Sheppard. Marshman, Ryan Richardson, Ben Lockett, Mackenzie Warman and Steven Farrelly were amongst the best for Reynella.

Port Noarlunga notched their first win of 2020 with a 12-point win at Cove. A low scoring first half saw Port Noarlunga lead by just two points at the main break. The game opened up in the third term with each side scoring four goals to leave the scores locked at 7.8 (50) each. The last quarter was a dour struggle with Port Noarlunga kicking the only two goals of the last stanza to win 9.11 (65) to 7.11 (53). Dylan Williams kicked three goals for the Cockle Divers with Elijah Satala and Ian Milera adding a couple of goals each for the winners. Scott Grieve and Lincoln Holder snagged two goals each for the Cobras. James Ledgard, Phil Brown, Connor Sampson, Nick Steele and Williams were best for Port Noarlunga while the Cobras were best served by Michael Galley, Ben Charlesworth, Kyle Stoldt, Grieve and Scott Abbott.

Reigning premier Flagstaff Hill joined Christies Beach and Morphett Vale as the only undefeated teams after two rounds with a hard fought win at home against Happy Valley. Conditions were difficult with only two goals kicked against the wind all day. Happy Valley started well to take a 12-point lead into quarter time. The home side turned it around in the second term kicking four goals to zero and led by a handy 15 points at halftime. Happy Valley hit back in the third term to take a three-point lead into the last quarter. However that would be the end of the road for the Vikings as the Falcons took over in the last term to kick 4.3 to 0.0 and seal a 24-point victory, 10.10 (70) to 7.4 (46). Sam Tharaldsen, Mitchell Johnson and Ryan Mountford kicked two goals each for the winners while Joel Beeche also kicked two for Happy Valley.
