Mount Compass win a thriller against McLaren to stay on top of the GSFLW ladder

Mount Compass won a thriller against McLaren at Encounter Bay yesterday to remain top of the Great Southern Football League Women’s (GSFLW) competition after 12 rounds. It was an excellent game between two of the main premiership contenders with ‘Compass’ prevailing by a solitary point. Mount Compass started well to lead by 11 points at quarter time before the Eagles hit back in the second term to trail by just three points at halftime. The second half was nip-and-tuck with both teams kicking three goals each but the Bulldogs were more accurate kicking 6.2 (38) to McLaren 5.7 (37). Heidi Smith kicked three goals for Mount Compass and Brooke Boileau kicked two. Sheena Peters kicked three goals for McLaren. Megan Tilby, Heidi Smith, Boileau, Taylah Eastwood and Amy Taylor were the best players for Mount Compass. Ruby Flanagan-Sjoberg, Sophia Flanagan-Sjoberg, Emily Rowe, Layla Rogers and Donna Boal were best for McLaren.


Strathalbyn won their third game on the trot after a convincing 56-point win against Encounter Bay. Strathalbyn led by 18 points at quarter time, 26 points at halftime and 38 points at the last change before winning 9.3 (57) to 0.1 (1). Megan Rich was a star up forward for the Roosters as she kicked seven goals. Emma Chapman continued her excellent season to be named best on ground for the Roosters. She was well supported by skipper Morgan Tucker, Rebecca Rice and Tessa Grant. Best players for Encounter Bay were Tess Huxtable, Kerri Galpin, Chelsea Walker, Demy Zahradnik and Kayla Lang. 


Willunga consolidated second spot on the ladder following their convincing 91-point win over Yankalilla. The Demons led by 38 points at halftime before kicking a further eight goals to zero to win 13.13 (91) to 0.0 (0). Lauren Clifton (4), Jessica Harris (3), Holly Ifould (2) and Cleo Guilfoyle (2) were the multiple goalkickers for Willunga. Caitlin Radbone, Kristen Rothwell, Clifton, Emily Cooper and Patty Parry were best for the Demons while for Yankalilla, Nari Wright, Tegan Cross and Jemma Ellis were among their best players.


Goolwa/Port Elliot won their sixth game of 2021 to remain in fourth spot on the ladder. The Magpies travelled to Willunga and came away with a convincing 90-point win against Victor Harbor. Asha Bell kicked four goals for the Magpies and Jaimi Griffen kicked three. Renee Moon was best for Goolwa/Port Elliot for the second week in a row with Catherine Griffen and Megan Hoad also playing good games. Victor Harbor were best served by Demi Morse, Jaimee Millard, Skye Kartinyeri-Sumner, Lauren Reichenbach-Cousins and Kitty Lust.
