Mudlarks are big winners during round seven in Great Southern Football

Myponga-Sellicks won their fifth game of the season with a 66-point victory at Langhorne Creek during round seven action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) yesterday. Myponga-Sellicks led by just four points at quarter time, before kicking six goals to two in the second quarter to take a handy 28-point lead to halftime. It was more of the same in the second half as the Mudlarks kicked a further nine goals to three to win 16.8 (104) to 5.8 (38). Jayden Scott was a star for Myponga-Sellicks with seven goals in a best-on-ground performance, while Darcy Clifford kicked two goals for the Hawks. Joining Scott in the best players for the Mudlarks were Ryan Kelly, Harrison Cock, Nathan Hedger and Scott Ogilvie. The Hawks were best served by Jedd Rothe, Clifford, Tom Derham, James Dawson and Shannon Jones.


Mount Compass consolidated their spot in the top-five with a thrilling five-point win against Encounter Bay yesterday. The game was tight throughout before ‘Compass’ prevailed 8.6 (54) to 7.7 (49). Tom Pinyon kicked four goals for the Bulldogs, while their best players were Ziggy Vitkunas, Aidan Brencens, Will Zimmermann, Tom Vitkunas and Lochie Nash. Tyson Neale kicked three goals for the Bays and their best players were Tyler Baldock, Elijah Horrocks, Neale, Callum Tonkin and Connor Hills. 


McLaren Districts continued their unbeaten start to the season with a grinding 24-point win against Goolwa/Port Elliot at McLaren Vale. It appeared a major upset was on the cards at three quarter time, as the Magpies held a slender two-point lead over the reigning premier. The Eagles steadied, kicking five goals to one in the last term, to win 9.14 (68) to 6.8 (44). Matthew Merrett (3) and Daniel Marr (2) were the multiple goalkickers for the Eagles, while their best players included Brett Ellis, Joel Vandeleur, Merrett, Jamie Smith and Codey Ellison. Best players for the Magpies included Tom Barry, Brett Heintze, Fred Nissen, Jacob Hughes and Lucas Hughes.


Willunga won their fifth game of 2023 with a 23-point victory against Strathalbyn. The first half was a tight affair with the Demons leading by six points at the long break. Willunga pulled away in the second half, kicking eight goals to four, to win 15.10 (100) to 10.17 (77). Ryan Sherry kicked six goals (22 for the season) for Willunga and skipper Sam Renney slotted four majors. Richard O’Grady kicked three goals for the Roosters. Harrison Mills, Renney, Sherry, Daniel Bass and Job Colwell were named best for Willunga, while ‘Strath’ were best served by Daniel Pegler, O’Grady, Marc Elliott, Brock Keding and Adam Clark.


Victor Harbor made their way into the top-five with a convincing 78-point win against Yankalilla. The ‘Roos led by 20 points at halftime, before kicking 11 goals to two in the second half to win 18.12 (120) to 6.6 (42). ‘Victor’ had nine different goalkickers with Michael Ross (4), Sam Overall (3) and Daniel Stock (3) the leading goalkickers. Denver Ker kicked two goals for the Tigers. Overall was adjudged best player for Victor Harbor and he was well supported by Jesse McKinnon, Reece Kleinig, Mitchell Brook and Zac Dowling. Best for Yankalilla included Luke Bartlett, Joel Kay and Sam Crawford.
