Mudlarks clean up reigning premier in Great Southern Football

Myponga-Sellicks won their 10th game of the season after defeating reigning premier McLaren Districts by 47 points at Myponga during round 14 action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) yesterday. The Mudlarks led by 28 points at halftime, before kicking five goals to two in the second half, to win 11.8 (74) to 4.3 (27). Sam Kennedy kicked four goals in a best-on-ground performance for Myponga-Sellicks, while Matthew Merrett kicked two goals for the Eagles. Joining Kennedy in the best players for the Mudlarks were Thomas Carroll, Anthony Kempster, Luke Whitford and Jake Spinks. Best players for McLaren Districts included Tom Fenoughty, Stuart Green, Jackson Daniels, Billy Chahla and Todd McKay.


Langhorne Creek kept their slim finals hopes alive after a crucial 21-point win against Willunga at Langhorne Creek yesterday. The first quarter was tight as Willunga took a two-point lead to the first break. Langhorne Creek took control of the contest with four goals to one in the second term to take a handy 20-point lead at halftime. Both sides kicked three goals in the second half as Langhorne Creek came out on top 10.12 (72) to 7.9 (51). Darcy Clifford starred up forward for the Hawks with five goals, while Daniel Lee kicked two majors for the Demons. Jarrod Kellock was named best for Langhorne Creek and he was well supported by Clifford, Tom Derham, Coby Helyar and Josh Towk. Best players for Willunga included Sam Renney, Harrison Mills, Brad Haskett, Danny Juckers and Scott Brown. 


Victor Harbor all but confirmed their spot in the finals with a huge 156-point win against Goolwa/Port Elliot. ‘Victor’ led by 21 points at quarter time, 56 points at halftime, and 105 points at the last change before winning 27.19 (181) to 4.1 (25). The ‘Roos had nine different goalkickers with Daniel Stock leading the way with eight majors, while Sam Basham slotted six goals and Sam Overall four. Best players for ‘Victor’ were Jesse McKinnon, Overall, Zac Dowling, Stock and Kane Cooper. The Magpies were best served by Ryan Carnelly, Kosta Dekoning, Jesse Bates, Jye Bottroff and Rory Hausser.


Encounter Bay won their fifth game of the season after defeating a gallant Yankalilla by 22 points. The first half was tight with ‘Yank’ in front by two points at halftime. The Bays took over in the second half, kicking nine goals to five, to run out winners 15.7 (97) to 11.9 (75). Mason Middleton starred up forward for Encounter Bay with seven goals, while Denver Ker kicked four goals for the Tigers. Bays skipper Tyson Neale was best-on-ground and he was well supported by Middleton, Pat Taggart, Tyler Baldock and Callum Tonkin. Best for Yankalilla were Angus Weir, James Hargreaves, Liam Gerber, Joe Tyllis and Adam Hunt.


Mount Compass have moved a step closer to finals action after a thrilling four-point win at home against Strathalbyn. Mount Compass got off to a great start as they pulled out to a 35-point lead by quarter time. The next two terms were pretty even with the Bulldogs still ahead by a handy 30 points at the final change. The Roosters came roaring home in the final term, kicking five goals to one, but ultimately came up short as ‘Compass’ held on to win 9.15 (69) to 9.11 (65). Tom Pinyon, Klaus Simons and Rilee Endersby all kicked two goals for Mount Compass, while Marc Elliott kicked three goals for the Roosters and was named best player for his team. Other good players for ‘Strath’ were Cooper Machin, Lachlan Butler, Mark Tucker and Richard O’Grady. Best players for Mount Compass included Simons, Matthew King, Ziggy Vitkunas, Tom Vitkunas and Endersby.
