Mudlarks on fire in Great Southern Football

Myponga/Sellicks won their first game of the season with an upset 12-point win at Mount Compass during round two action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) yesterday. Mount Compass started well to lead by 16 points at halftime, but the game turned in the third term as the Mudlarks slammed on six goals to two to turn for home leading by 13 points. It was a high scoring final quarter, with both sides kicking five goals, before Myponga/Sellicks won 15.12 (102) to 14.6 (90). Hassan Ahmat-Watkins was a star up forward for the Mudlarks with six goals and he was well supported by Connor Sampson with three goals. Jordan Boots also kicked three goals for Mount Compass. Best players for the Mudlarks were Levi Proude, Ahmat-Watkins, Elliot Chalmers, Sampson and Scott Ogilvie. Sam Haniford, Tomas Vitkunas, Tom Pinyon, Corey Grove and Bailey Hann were the best players for the Bulldogs.


McLaren Eagles remain undefeated after two rounds following their comprehensive 193-point win at Yankalilla yesterday. The Eagles kicked 10 goals in the first term and another 10 in the last quarter to win 31.15 (201) to 1.2 (8). McLaren had 13 different goalkickers with James Grimley (6), Matthew Merrett (5) and Jordan Mutton (5) leading the way. The Eagles had plenty of good players including Lachlan Matthews, Codey Ellison, Tarak Redigolo, Grimley and Mutton. It was a tough day for the Tigers but Ethan Moore, Joel Kay, Matthew Wilson, Angus Weir and Ryan Fisher could hold their heads high.


Victor Harbor continued their excellent start to the season with a convincing 100-point win over Goolwa/Port Elliot at Goolwa. The ‘Roos led by 27 points at the first change, 44 points at halftime and 50 points at the last change before kicking 7.9 to 0.1 in the final term to win 21.24 (150) to 7.8 (50). Sam Basham kicked five goals for ‘Victor’ and he was well supported by Kane Cooper (4) and Jackson Elmes (4). Leo Harrison (3) and Jaid Cooper (2) were the multiple goalkickers for the Magpies. Best players for the undefeated Victor Harbor were Jesse McKinnon, Ben Yeomans, Zac Dowling, Elmes and Ryan Jeffries. Logan Payne, Cooper, Charlie Steele, Kaiden Wilton and Jordan Wilson-King were among the best players for Goolwa/Port Elliot. 


Encounter Bay made it two-from-two with a big 99-point win at home over perennial powerhouse Langhorne Creek. The game was reasonably tight early with the Bays taking a 20-point lead to halftime before they really put the foot down, to kick 13 goals to one in the second half and win 21.13 (139) to 6.4 (40). Jake Tarca (5), Tyson Neale (4) and Nick Marshall (3) were the leading goalkickers for the Bays. Marcus Lippett, Tarca, Neale, Cohen Pettitt and Hamish Tonkin were named best for Encounter Bay. Jackson Humphries, Coby Helyar and Jack Keynes were among the best players for the Hawks.


Reigning premier Willunga continued their unbeaten start to 2022 with a hard fought 13.12 (90) to 7.14 (56) win over Strathalbyn at Willunga yesterday. The match was up for grabs at halftime as the Demons led by just nine points. Six unanswered goals in the third term set Willunga on the path to their 34-point victory. Tyson Hoffmann (3), Jake Standfield (3) and Brad Haskett (2) were the multiple goalkickers for Willunga, while Riley Clamp slotted three majors for ‘Strath’. Best for Willunga was Brett Miegel, Marcus Burdett, Cam Hutchens, Job Colwell and Lachlan Scott. Clamp, Tom Redden, Reid Mahains, Richard O’Grady and Mark Tucker were the Roosters’ best players.
