Mudlarks on fire in Great Southern Football

Myponga/Sellicks took another big scalp on their way to a fourth win in a row during round five action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) yesterday. The Mudlarks traveled to Langhorne Creek and came away with a 46-point win against the Hawks to consolidate their spot in the top-five ahead of a big clash at Willunga next week. On the flipside, the Hawks find themselves down in eighth spot and in real danger of missing out on finals action in 2022. Myponga/Sellicks led at every change yesterday before winning 13.11 (89) to 5.13 (43). Ben Kennedy kicked four goals in a best-on-ground performance for the visitors, while Hassan Ahmat-Watkins slotted three majors. Mitch Cleggett and Darcy Clifford each kicked two goals for the home side. Other good players for Myponga/Sellicks were Delahay Miller, Jake Spinks, Cooper Gilbert, Daniel Trevena and Scott Ogilvie. Langhorne Creek was best served by David Warren, Clifford and Matt Tonkin. 


Reigning premier Willunga moved to second spot on the GSFL ladder after a crushing 162-point win against Goolwa/Port Elliot at Goolwa. The Demons led by 33 points at quarter time, 63 points at halftime and 84 points at the final change, before kicking a further 12 goals to zero in the final quarter to win 28.16 (184) to 3.4 (22). Cam Hutchens, Myles Warmington, Brad Haskett, Sam Renney, Brett Miegel and Izaac Logan were named best players for the reigning premier. For the Magpies, Charlie Steele, Kosta Dekoning and Dene McKinlay were among their best. 


McLaren Eagles continued their perfect start to 2022 with a 60-point win over Strathalbyn to keep them a game clear on top of the ladder. A six goal to one second term gave the Eagles an unassailable 48-point lead at halftime, before a further seven goals to five in the second half saw McLaren win 17.15 (117) to 8.9 (57). The Eagles had 10 different goalkickers with Matthew Merrett leading the way with six goals to give him 19 majors for the season so far. Riley Clamp, Ben Simounds and Hayden Kemp all kicked two goals for the Roosters. Tyson Brown, Todd McKay, Sam Lawrie, Merrett and Brett Ellis were named best for the Eagles, while Jacob Wright, Nathan Clarke and Austin McFarlane were among the best for Strathalbyn.


Encounter Bay had a come from behind 11-point win at Mount Compass yesterday to remain in third spot on the GSFL ladder. The Bays trailed by 12 points at halftime before kicking eight goals to four in the second half to win 14.4 (88) to 11.11 (77). Nick Marshall kicked five goals for the Bays, while Jake Tarca kicked four. Corey Grove kicked four goals for Mount Compass with Tom Pinyon and Ziggy Vitkunas kicking two goals each. Best players for Encounter Bay included Tyson Neale, Fraser Tonkin, Mitchell Davis, Marcus Lippett and Marshall. Best for Mount Compass were Shane Heatley, Tom Vitkunas, Grove, Adam Hunter and Bailey Hann. 


Victor Harbor won their third game for the season with a comprehensive 95-point win against Yankalilla at ‘Victor’ yesterday. The ‘Roos led by 32 points at quarter time, 44 points at halftime and 63 points at the last change, before winning 17.11 (113) to 2.6 (18). Sam Basham kicked six goals for Victor Harbor and he was well supported by Jackson Elmes with four goals. Joseph Tyllis and Will Hogben were Yankalilla’s only goalkickers. Zac Dowling, Elmes, Jesse McKinnon, Heath Treloar and Sam Basham were best for the ‘Roos. Ben McConnell, Jesse Fitzgerald and Matt James were among the best for the Tigers.
