Mudlarks surging towards first victory of the season in Great Southern Cricket

Myponga-Sellicks are in an excellent position to win their first game of the Great Southern Association (GSCA) ‘A’ grade competition at stumps on day one of their game against Victor Harbor at Myponga. Victor Harbor batted first and it was tough going as they were bowled out in the 51st over for 105 with skipper Sean Medlen top scoring with 19 (78 balls). Vinnie Nizzola was the destroyer for the Mudlarks with the excellent figures of 5/17 from a miserly 16.3 overs (8 maidens) and he was well supported by Jackson Lee who snared 3/36 (11). Myponga-Sellicks will resume at 3/52 next week after losing Kobe Dooley (14), Cam Turner (14) and Scott McMahon (10) before stumps. Lachlan Hywood (2/13) and Luke Harding (1/17) were the wicket takers for the Vipers.

A Jason Scarff century has led Noarlunga to a big total of 4/343 at stumps on day one of their clash with reigning premier Encounter Bay at Old Noarlunga. Scarff made 120 from 137 balls (13 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s) and was involved in a 188-run stand for the third wicket with Michael Ledgard. Ledgard made 90 from 149 balls (7 x 4’s). Cam Bullard (39), Travis Bronstein (36) and a quickfire 37 not out (21 balls) from Sean Williams helped Noarlunga put up their biggest total since the 2015/16 season. Sam Hoffmann (2/49), Chris Butler (1/52) and Kieran Garrett (1/67) were the wicket takers for Encounter Bay.

Yankalilla also put up a big score in their match against McLaren Districts as they compiled a total of 321 before being bowled out in the 68th over, with Doug Jones left stranded on 99 not out from 93 balls. Earlier, Aaron Smith hit a quickfire 90 from just 60 balls, while skipper Luke Bartlett made 43 (99). Five Crushers bowlers took wickets with Kevin Grant (3/73) and Roy Graham (3/92) leading the way.

Goolwa will be pushing for an outright victory after a dominant first day of their clash with Mount Compass at Goolwa. Mount Compass batted first and got themselves into a reasonable position at 2/60 with Lochie Nash (40) and Paul Barrett (23) adding 57 runs for the third wicket. However, a collapse of 8/50 saw ‘Compass’ bowled out in the 43rd over for 110. Sean McIvor (3/28), James Lawrence (3/32), Josh Jones (2/28) and Dean Vickery (1/17) were the wicket takers for the Magpies. Sam Carlyle (51 from 66), Matt Overall (23 not out) and Andy Evans (21 not out) helped lift Goolwa to within nine runs of first innings points as they reached stumps at 2/102. Bailey Baldock (1/19) and Aaron Dalitz (1/39) were the wicket takers for the Bulls.

Port Elliot have already banked the first innings points against Willunga after a dominant display on day one of their clash at Port Elliot. The home side ended the day on 5/175, an overall lead of 115 runs after bowling the Demons out for just 60 in their first innings. Jaspa Tonkin was the star with the bat for the Bloods with 101 not out from 82 balls (14 x 4’s, 1 x 6) in just his second game for the club since coming over from Langhorne Creek at the start of the season. Earlier, Willunga were sent in to bat and were in all sorts of trouble at 6/18, before being bowled out in the 39th over for just 60. Eddie Last (17) and Takdir Sahota (13) were the only Demons batsmen to reach double figures. Off-spinner Ben Griffiths took three wickets in four balls to finish with 3/0 (1.2), while Simon Donaldson (2/1 from eight overs) and Ben Martin (2/12) were the other multiple wicket takers.
